Frequently Asked Questions

Can Radiant fix my garbage disposal?

Yes, we can help! If you’re experiencing unusual noises, clogged drains, or a garbage disposal that won’t turn on, give Radiant a call. We specialize in repairing garbage disposals and insinkerators. Schedule an appointment with us online for a quick repair in your home.

Cleaning your garbage disposal regularly is essential to prevent unpleasant odors, bacteria buildup, and potential clogs. But, the frequency of cleaning depends on your usage and habits. At Radiant, we recommend you clean your garbage disposal out at least once a week following one or more of the tips below:

  1. Run cold water through the disposal for a few seconds after each use to help flush away debris
  2. Avoid putting large amounts of food waste down the disposal at once
  3. You can use a simple and natural cleaning solution made from baking soda and vinegar
    • Pour about half a cup of baking soda down the disposal
    • Follow it with a cup of white vinegar
    • Let the mixture sit for a few minutes to allow it to fizz and break down residue
    • Flush the disposal with hot water while running it
  4. Drop a few ice cubes and citrus peels (lemon, lime, or orange) into the disposal
  5. Turn on the disposal while running cold water to help clean the blades and freshen the unit

Regular cleaning not only keeps your garbage disposal in good working condition but also contributes to a hygienic and pleasant kitchen environment. If any of these tips don’t work for you, contact Radiant Plumbing and Air, and we’ll quickly come out to diagnose the rest of your home’s pipes.

You’re in your kitchen every day. If your garbage disposal suddenly starts making different noises, chances are something is amiss. However, noise is not the only indication that your garbage disposal needs repair. Slow draining, clogs, electrical trips, and even random resets are all signs that your garbage disposal may require fixing. Schedule an appointment with Radiant Plumbing and Air to have them take a look. They have been repairing and replacing garbage disposals since 1999.

If you believe that something shouldn’t be disposed of in the drain, it’s likely that it shouldn’t. The main substances to avoid are oil and grease. If you’ve just cooked the family a big bacon breakfast, we suggest waiting for the oil to cool down and then disposing of it in a glass container, or if it has solidified, directly in the garbage can. Other less commonly known items that should not be put down the drain, such as stringy vegetables, bones, coffee grounds, pits & seeds, peels, pasta, and other chemicals and non-food items.

If your garbage disposal is leaking, it’s crucial to address the issue promptly to prevent water damage. Always follow safety precautions when working with electrical appliances, and if you’re unsure about how to handle the situation, contact Radiant Plumbing and we’ll come investigate it the situation for you.

First, turn off the power to the disposal. Identify the source of the leak, which may be from the sink flange, the dishwasher hose connection, or the bottom of the disposal unit. Tighten any loose connections, and if the leak persists, check for cracks or damage in the disposal unit. Replace damaged parts or, if necessary, consider consulting a professional plumber for a thorough inspection and repair. Always prioritize safety by turning off the power before attempting any maintenance.

If your garbage disposal isn’t working, first, check for a power issue by ensuring it’s plugged in and the circuit breaker isn’t tripped. Press the reset button on the bottom of the disposal. If that doesn’t work, turn off the power to the disposal before reaching in with an Allen wrench to manually rotate the jamming mechanism, freeing up the impellers. Look for foreign objects or debris causing the jam. Rotate the disposal blades with the wrench, run cold water while operating, and avoid overloading. If these steps don’t work, or if you’re uncertain, request a repair from Radiant Plumbing and Air.

If your garbage disposal won’t turn on, check the power supply by ensuring it’s plugged in and checking the circuit breaker. Press the reset button on the bottom of the disposal unit. To determine if your kitchen sink has a garbage disposal, look underneath for a cylindrical unit with a reset button and potentially an Allen wrench hole. If problems persist, consult a professional plumber for further assistance, prioritizing safety by turning off the power before any maintenance.

If your current garbage disposal is malfunctioning or if you’re planning to upgrade your kitchen during a remodel, consider opting for a new eco-friendly garbage disposal. Unlike the insinkerators of the past, modern garbage disposals offer various eco-friendly features. These include energy-efficient and high-torque motors, bio-charged injection technology that utilizes microorganisms to break down food waste, noise reduction, stainless steel parts that prolong the lifespan of the disposal, water-efficient models to reduce water usage, and even disposals made from recycled materials. The technicians at Radiant Plumbing and Air can help you find the perfect disposal for your home and family.
