San Antonio Water Quality
San Antonio tap water is treated, tested and safe to drink. It is also some of the hardest municipal water in Texas, because most of it is pumped from the Edwards Aquifer, a limestone formation that dissolves into the water on its way to your meter. That hardness is what leaves the white crust on the shower door, kills water heaters young, and makes soap feel like it never rinses off. The chlorine that keeps the water safe on its trip through the mains is the other thing people notice, usually as taste and smell at the kitchen tap.
Outside the city, the picture changes. Homes on private wells around Boerne, Helotes and the hills toward the Guadalupe can see even harder water, plus sediment, iron staining or a sulfur smell, and there is no utility treating it before it reaches the house. Those homes need testing before anyone recommends equipment, because the right filter for one well is the wrong one for the well next door.
Our approach is to test first, then match the equipment to the problem: a softener for hardness, carbon filtration for chlorine taste, reverse osmosis at the sink for drinking water, and well-specific treatment where it is needed. The technical comparison of each option lives on our water quality page. What follows is how it plays out in San Antonio homes.
What Your Water Is Telling You
Each of these points to a different fix. Matching the sign to the equipment is most of the job.
Hardness. The same deposit is forming inside the water heater and dishwasher. Answer: a softener.
Disinfectant from the municipal system. Answer: carbon filtration, whole-home or at the sink.
Dissolved minerals coming out as the water freezes or dries. Answer: reverse osmosis for the fridge and kitchen tap.
Minerals binding with soap and leaving a film. Answer: a softener, sized to the household.
Iron and sulfur, common in Hill Country wells north and west of the city. Answer: a well test, then targeted treatment.
Water heaters, dishwashers and coffee makers scaled up inside. Answer: stop the minerals at the point of entry.
What We Install and Service
From the meter to the kitchen tap, for homes on SAWS water and homes on a well.
How It Works
The equipment is the easy part. Getting the diagnosis right is what keeps you from buying twice.
City or well, we test what actually comes out of your faucet and show you the results.
Softener, filter, RO, or a combination. We explain what each will and will not change, and where it would go.
Honored for 72 hours, no hidden fees, and financing through Service Finance Company if you want to spread it out.
Plumbed in, programmed for your water, and tested again at the tap so you can see the difference in the numbers.
Save on the work your home needs most.
One test tells us what your San Antonio home actually needs. Then you decide.

It is safe. SAWS treats and tests the supply, and the water meets drinking standards. Treating it at home is about comfort and about what the water does to your plumbing, not safety. The hardness that comes with Edwards Aquifer water scales up water heaters, dishwashers and fixtures, and it makes soap and detergent work poorly. The chlorine that keeps the water safe in the mains affects taste. A softener addresses the first problem, carbon filtration the second, and reverse osmosis gives you clean-tasting drinking water at one tap. Which of those you want depends on what bothers you and what you are trying to protect.
They solve three different problems. A water softener swaps the calcium and magnesium that make water hard for sodium, which stops scale throughout the house; it does nothing for taste. A whole-home carbon filter removes chlorine and improves taste and odor at every tap; it does nothing for hardness. Reverse osmosis pushes water through a fine membrane and removes most dissolved minerals and contaminants, but it works slowly, so it is installed at one sink for drinking and cooking rather than for the whole house. Many San Antonio homes end up with a softener plus RO at the kitchen sink. We will tell you which combination your test results actually call for.
Both, and the money part is larger than most people realize. Scale on the bottom of a water heater insulates the burner or elements from the water, so the heater runs longer to do the same job and wears out years early. Scale inside a dishwasher, washing machine and coffee maker shortens their lives too. Hard water also makes soap and detergent less effective, so you use more of it. Then there is the repair side: fill valves, cartridges and aerators clogged with mineral deposits are a steady share of the plumbing calls we run in San Antonio. Softening the water at the point of entry stops most of that at once.
Yes, and wells are where testing matters most. A Hill Country well north or west of San Antonio can be harder than city water and may carry iron, sulfur, sediment or bacteria that SAWS customers never deal with, and no two wells are quite alike. We test for the full picture before recommending anything. The treatment might be a softener alone, a sediment filter ahead of it, an iron filter, or a UV or chlorination stage if bacteria are present. We also look at the pressure tank and the line from the wellhead, since a well system has more places for a problem to hide than a city meter does.
We can install one, but a test takes minutes and changes what we would install. Softeners are sized by grains of hardness and household water use, and San Antonio hardness varies by source, by season and by whether SAWS is blending in water from outside the aquifer. An undersized softener regenerates constantly and wastes salt; an oversized one costs more than it should. On a well, skipping the test is how a homeowner ends up with a softener fouled by iron six months later. The test is quick, it is part of the visit, and it means the written quote is for equipment that fits your water, not a guess.
