AC Installation
The original systems in Mueller’s first homes are reaching the end. We replace them with efficient equipment that fits the same footprint.
Replacement optionsService That Fits a Mueller Home
Mueller was designed from scratch on the old airport, and its homes are tighter, more efficient and more tightly packed than anything else in Austin. Radiant’s licensed plumbers, HVAC technicians and electricians work with that design, not against it.
Mueller is not a suburb. It is a master-planned neighborhood inside Austin, built on the grounds of the old Robert Mueller Municipal Airport after it closed in 1999, with homes going up from the mid-2000s onward around Mueller Lake Park and the Browning Hangar. The houses were built to green-building standards: tight envelopes, high-efficiency HVAC, tankless water heaters in many of them, solar on a good share of roofs, and a design code that governs where outdoor equipment can sit.
That is a different service call from the rest of Austin. The row houses and yard homes share alleys and narrow side yards, so a condenser swap has to fit where the original went. The earliest homes are now approaching twenty years old, which means the first generation of air conditioners, tankless water heaters and heat pumps is being replaced. And an all-electric or solar-equipped house needs electricians who understand the panel they are working in, not just the outlet they are adding.
Radiant has served central Austin since 1999, the same year the runways closed. Every visit is a licensed, background-checked technician, a straight explanation and a written price before work begins, with no surprise fees on a weekend or holiday. The Home Comfort Guarantee covers every job.

Clear the drainLocal Knowledge
Built tight and built efficient. Mueller homes were designed to green-building standards from the start, with sealed envelopes and high-efficiency equipment. A tight house is comfortable and cheap to cool, but it also holds onto humidity, cooking odors and cedar pollen that comes in on shoes. Right-sized cooling, good filtration and a properly working exhaust and fresh-air setup keep it feeling as good as it was meant to.
First-generation equipment aging out. The earliest phases were built in the mid-to-late 2000s, so their original air conditioners, heat pumps and tankless water heaters are reaching replacement age at about the same time. We give an honest repair-or-replace answer, and financing is available when replacement is the right call.
Tankless water heaters and hard water. Austin water is hard enough to scale a tankless heat exchanger within a few years. Annual descaling keeps flow and temperature steady and prevents the error codes that show up otherwise.
Small lots, alleys and design rules. Condensers live in narrow side yards or by the alley garage, and the neighborhood design code has a say in placement and screening. We plan equipment swaps to fit the original footprint and keep the exterior compliant.
Solar and all-electric homes. Many Mueller houses have rooftop solar and some are all-electric. Adding an EV charger or a new circuit means working around inverters, disconnects and a panel that may already be near capacity. Licensed electricians who have seen that setup make the difference.
Freezes. Exterior tankless units and hose bibs are the freeze risk here. A few minutes of preparation before a February 2021-style front prevents a burst heat exchanger.

Neither extreme. A system from the mid-2000s that still cools well and passes a tune-up can keep going, and we will not push a replacement on age alone. What changes the math is a major repair: a failed compressor, a leaking evaporator coil or a control board on a unit that old is money spent on borrowed time, and older refrigerant makes some repairs more expensive than they used to be. Our approach is a proper inspection, a written price for the repair and, beside it, the price of a properly sized replacement with financing. You choose. If you would rather plan the swap for a mild month instead of an August emergency, we can schedule it.
Usually not. In Austin’s hard water, the most common cause of a tankless unit throwing codes and cycling cold is scale inside the heat exchanger restricting flow, especially on a unit that has never been descaled. A descaling service flushes the exchanger, cleans the inlet screen and checks the venting and igniter. If the unit is fifteen years old and the exchanger is pitted, we will tell you that honestly and quote a replacement, but most calls end with a working heater and a recommendation to put descaling on an annual schedule. Care Club members get the plumbing inspection that catches it early.
It adds steps, not obstacles. A solar-equipped home has an inverter, a production meter and a backfeed breaker in the main panel, and those affect how much room and capacity is left for a 40- or 50-amp charger circuit. Our licensed electricians run a load calculation that accounts for the solar interconnection, confirm the panel can take the new breaker within code limits, and route the circuit to the garage or alley parking pad. If the panel is at its limit, we show you the options with a written price for each. Every step is permitted and inspected. Details are on our EV charger page.
Yes, and we plan for it. Mueller’s row houses and yard homes put outdoor units in tight side yards, against alley garages or on small pads that the neighborhood design guidelines govern. When we replace a system we measure the space first, choose equipment with a footprint and clearance that fits, and keep the placement and screening consistent with what was approved originally. We also check that the condenser has enough airflow around it, because a unit crammed against a fence loses efficiency and life. The install is quoted in writing before the old unit comes out, and HVAC installs over $3,000 are quality-reviewed by a manager under the Home Comfort Guarantee.
