  • Shut down and drain: The technician turns off the water supply and the power or gas, then drains the old tank. A tank full of mineral sediment drains slowly, which is common with the hard water we have here.
  • Remove the old unit: Connections are cut or unthreaded and the old heater is carried out.
  • Set and connect the new heater: Water lines, fuel or power, venting, the temperature and pressure relief valve, and the drain pan are connected or replaced. Where the home needs one, an expansion tank is added.

  • Tankless conversions: Going from a tank to a tankless unit often means new venting, a larger gas line, mounting hardware, and sometimes electrical work. Plan on additional time.
  • Attic installations: Many Central Texas homes keep the water heater in the attic. Getting a heavy old tank down a pull-down ladder and a new one up, then setting the drain pan and overflow line correctly, adds real labor.
  • Older homes: Corroded fittings, worn shutoff valves, undersized gas piping, or venting that no longer meets current safety standards all need to be corrected during the install.
  • Changing size or fuel type: A bigger tank or a switch between gas and electric means new connections rather than reused ones.

How to Prepare for a Faster Install

  • Clear a path to the water heater and the space around it, especially in a garage or closet.
  • Know where your main water shutoff is located.
  • Expect to be without hot water for the length of the install, so plan showers and laundry accordingly.
