San Antonio Heating & Air

The Same Equipment Has to Do Both Jobs Here

San Antonio asks something unusual of a home comfort system. From April into October it has to beat 100-degree afternoons and Gulf humidity, day after day, with almost no rest. Then, a few weeks later, a norther drops the overnight low into the 30s and the same blower, the same ductwork and the same thermostat are expected to keep the house warm. Every few years the winter turns serious, as it did in February 2021, and the heating side stops being an afterthought.

In most homes here the two halves share hardware. The furnace or electric air handler sits in the attic or a hall closet with the air conditioner’s indoor coil bolted on top of it, and one fan moves the air for both. That is why we treat heating and cooling as one system rather than two trades. A blower motor that ran all summer is the one you will need in December. Ducts that leak cold air in August leak warm air in January. We have worked on the 1960s ranch houses around our Wye Drive office, the two-story homes in Stone Oak, the all-electric subdivisions out toward Cibolo and Schertz, and the historic houses near downtown since 1999, and Schmidt Mechanical’s San Antonio customers are now part of that same family.

How each piece of equipment works, from a straight-cool condenser to a dual-fuel heat pump, is laid out on our heating and air conditioning page. Below is what that equipment faces in this city, and where to go for the specific service you need.

  • Built for the long hot season Equipment sized and set up for humidity and 100-degree afternoons, with the cooling side checked before the heat arrives.
  • Ready for the short cold one Furnaces, heat strips and heat pump defrost tested in the fall, so the first freeze is not the first run of the year.
  • Two tune-ups a year Care Club members get a spring cooling visit and a fall heating visit on an enrolled system for $9.99 a month.

What Season Is It Failing In?

Where San Antonio Comfort Problems Come From

Some faults belong to summer, some to winter, and a surprising number belong to both. Here is how to tell which service you need.

  • The house cannot get below 78 by late afternoon

A summer problem: a dirty coil, a weak capacitor, a low charge or a unit that is simply worn out. Start with AC repair.

  • The first cold morning and nothing happens at the thermostat

A winter problem with summer roots: a flame sensor or ignitor that sat idle in a hot attic. That is a furnace repair call.

  • Bills are up in July and again in January

A both-seasons problem. Aging equipment, leaking attic ducts or a heat pump leaning on its strips. Worth pricing replacement against another year of repairs.

  • Warm air in cooling mode, or cool air in heating mode

The signature of a heat pump with a stuck reversing valve or a thermostat wired for the wrong equipment. See heat pumps.

  • Dust on every surface and allergies that never let up

The system runs so many hours here that it moves a lot of air, and everything in the ducts moves with it. See indoor air quality.

  • It works, but nobody has opened it up in years

The cheapest call on this list. A spring tune-up and a fall tune-up catch the parts that are about to quit.

One System, One Approach

How We Handle a San Antonio Comfort Call

A furnace that quit in a freeze and an air conditioner that quit in a heat wave get the same treatment.

  1. Tell us the season and the symptom

What the thermostat says, what the vents are doing and whether the outdoor unit is running. We are available around the clock, and the price does not change after hours.

  2. Look at the whole system

Because heating and cooling share the blower, the ducts and the thermostat, we check the parts that serve both before blaming the one that is on.

  3. One written price, good for 72 hours

No hidden fees. If the equipment is near the end of its life, you get replacement numbers alongside the repair, and the choice is yours.

  4. Prove it in the mode you need

A full cooling or heating cycle, temperatures measured at the registers, and the Home Comfort Guarantee behind the work.

Either way it is the same crew, the same price rules and the same hours: all of them.

Our 18 year old HVAC system finally gave out this past week, so we reached out to Radiant to see what could be done. They sent a tech out named Bryan the same day, and he did a great job looking over the entire HVAC system. He was friendly and helpful in explaining everything that he saw, and our options moving forward. We decided to replace the entire system, so we met with Jacob (same day thankfully) to find the best HVAC system for our needs. Jacob was friendly, professional, and did a great job explaining the different options on offer. Radiant was able to set-up next day install, which was much appreciated, because the temps were still going to be cold in the coming days.

The install team consisted of Carlos and Pablo, who were very courteous and professional, and were kind enough to answer any questions I had regarding the install. They did a great job installing our new HVAC system, and were tidy which is always appreciated! Before they left, they explained everything that had been done, and showed me photos of the work.

Our entire experience from start to finish was great. I appreciate that they send photos of who is coming to your home too. Friendly, kind, professional team members, and good work all the way around. Thanks Radiant!

This is the first time I’ve used radiant my neighbor recommended them…. I called them today and they set me up an appointment on the same day. I was totally shocked at that and the service call was only $39!!…. Highly recommend them Danielle showed up and he was a great guy and he put up with all my wishy-washiness and I had to hurry him because I was heading to church and he got caught in a lot of traffic getting here he even would’ve installed the part that broke but I Didn’t have the time tonight….. He was patient with me and just told me to call the office first thing in the morning and get a service call set up…. Thank you so much Radiant!!….
With another cold front coming in tomorrow now I just hope they can get me scheduled for a separate call tomorrow but I have a feeling they will. They are such a great company!!😊😊

Alex performed the winter service on my unit. This business along with Alex, are very professional and upfront about everything. To be transparent, this is the maintenance included with the purchase of a unit from them. I was informed about everything to include pictures as proof. I was told that my unit is 100% and very clean and again pictures to prove it. I was reccomended this business by a friend and glad he did. The initial purchase experience was also amazing. I had contacted 5 other businesses to get quotes about a new unit as my upstairs unit failed. 2 were outrageous quotes and I am technically still waiting on the other 3. On every instance of getting a quote, I waited about 1 week. Luckily my house has two units but still, un acceptable especially during the summer. I guess they all had so much business they did not care for mine. When I called this business not only did they come out the same day, I had the new unit installed with in 48 hrs. Oh and let's not forget the quote they gave me was the lowest of all. I can say enough good things about this business. Keep up the great work.

San Antonio Heating and Air Questions

Do you send the same technician for my air conditioner and my furnace?

Yes. Our San Antonio HVAC technicians are licensed for both under TACLB138286E, and in practice the two are hard to separate. In most homes here the furnace or air handler and the air conditioner’s indoor coil live in one cabinet in the attic, share a blower motor, breathe through the same ductwork and answer to the same thermostat. A technician who only knows one side would miss the cause half the time. It also means a heating visit is a chance to catch a cooling problem early, and the reverse. On a fall furnace tune-up we look at the drain and coil that gave you trouble in August; on a spring AC tune-up we note the blower wear that will matter in December.

When is the easiest time of year to replace a whole HVAC system in San Antonio?

The shoulder seasons: roughly March through early May, and again from late October into early December. The equipment is not under load, so you are not choosing a system in a hurry with the house at 88 degrees, and installation crews have more open days. Those are also the months when replacing the air conditioner and the furnace together makes the most sense, because the indoor coil and the furnace share a cabinet and doing both at once saves a second round of labor. We give you the options in writing, honored for 72 hours, and financing through Service Finance Company, LLC is available, subject to credit approval. Manager quality review applies to HVAC installs over $3,000.

Why do San Antonio HVAC problems always seem to show up in the first days of a heat wave or a cold front?

Because that is when the equipment is finally asked to work at full effort after weeks or months of coasting. A capacitor that tested weak in March runs fine on 85-degree days and fails on the first 100-degree afternoon. A furnace ignitor that cracked in the attic heat is not discovered until the first night in the 30s. And everyone in Bexar County finds out at the same time, which is why the phones are busiest in the first 48 hours of any extreme. The way around it is to run the system under load before the weather does: a tune-up in spring for cooling and one in the fall for heating. Care Club members get both on an enrolled system, along with priority scheduling when the rush hits.

My air conditioner is a few years old but my furnace is from the 1990s. Do they need to match?

They do not have to be the same age, but they do have to work together, and an old furnace can hold a newer air conditioner back. The AC’s indoor coil sits on the furnace and depends on the furnace blower to move air across it. A 30-year-old single-speed blower cannot deliver the airflow a modern high-efficiency condenser expects, so you lose some of the efficiency you paid for and, in this humidity, some moisture control too. If the furnace is otherwise sound, we will say so and leave it alone. If it is on borrowed time, replacing it with a variable-speed furnace or an air handler matched to the newer coil is worth pricing; our San Antonio furnace installation page explains the options.
