San Antonio Heat Pumps

Why So Many San Antonio Homes Run on a Heat Pump

Look at the outdoor units in an all-electric subdivision on the northeast side, in Cibolo or in the newer parts of Schertz and Converse, and most of them are heat pumps. The logic is simple. A heat pump is an air conditioner with a valve that lets it run backwards, so the same equipment that carries the enormous cooling load from April to October also heats the house on the mild mornings that make up most of a San Antonio winter. For a climate that spends far more time at 98 than at 28, it is a sensible way to build a house.

The catch is the exception. When a hard freeze settles over Bexar County, as it did in February 2021, a heat pump loses capacity as the outdoor temperature drops and falls back on electric heat strips. Those strips work, but they cost several times more to run, and if they have never been tested they may not work at all. A well-maintained heat pump with correctly wired auxiliary heat handles a freeze fine. A neglected one is where the no-heat calls come from. We have installed and serviced heat pumps across the metro since 1999.

How the refrigeration cycle reverses, what a defrost cycle is, and how auxiliary heat is supposed to behave are all explained on our heat pumps page. What follows is what matters for a heat pump in this city.

  • Cools and heats One outdoor unit and one air handler cover the whole year. Fewer parts to maintain than a separate furnace and AC.
  • Freeze-ready, if it is set up right We test the auxiliary heat strips and defrost control at every tune-up so a February cold snap is not the first time they run.
  • Installs reviewed by a manager Under the Home Comfort Guarantee, HVAC installations over $3,000 get a manager quality review.

Heat Pump Problems We See in San Antonio

Because a heat pump works year-round, its faults show up in both seasons. Here is how to read them.

  • Steam rising off the outdoor unit on a cold morning

A normal defrost cycle, and a good sign on a frosty day. If the unit is caked in ice that never clears, the defrost control has failed.

  • Auxiliary heat on when it is 55 outside

The strips are carrying the load the heat pump should. A low charge, a failed outdoor fan or a thermostat wired wrong, and a large electric bill either way.

  • Cool air in heating mode, or warm air in cooling

A stuck reversing valve, the one part a heat pump has that a plain air conditioner does not.

  • Cooling fine in June, sticky by August

The same humidity issues as any San Antonio AC: oversizing, fan settings, a dirty coil or a charge that has slipped.

  • A loud clunk or hiss when it switches modes

Some noise at the reversing valve is normal. A new bang, rattle or continuous hiss is a call.

  • Run time creeping up in both seasons

A heat pump logs more hours than any other system in the house. A loss of capacity shows on the bill in summer and winter alike.

Our 18 year old HVAC system finally gave out this past week, so we reached out to Radiant to see what could be done. They sent a tech out named Bryan the same day, and he did a great job looking over the entire HVAC system. He was friendly and helpful in explaining everything that he saw, and our options moving forward. We decided to replace the entire system, so we met with Jacob (same day thankfully) to find the best HVAC system for our needs. Jacob was friendly, professional, and did a great job explaining the different options on offer. Radiant was able to set-up next day install, which was much appreciated, because the temps were still going to be cold in the coming days.

The install team consisted of Carlos and Pablo, who were very courteous and professional, and were kind enough to answer any questions I had regarding the install. They did a great job installing our new HVAC system, and were tidy which is always appreciated! Before they left, they explained everything that had been done, and showed me photos of the work.

Our entire experience from start to finish was great. I appreciate that they send photos of who is coming to your home too. Friendly, kind, professional team members, and good work all the way around. Thanks Radiant!

Highly recommend them Danielle showed up and he was a great guy and he put up with all my wishy-washiness and I had to hurry him because I was heading to church and he got caught in a lot of traffic getting here he even would’ve installed the part that broke but I Didn’t have the time tonight….. He was patient with me and just told me to call the office first thing in the morning and get a service call set up…. Thank you so much Radiant!!….
With another cold front coming in tomorrow now I just hope they can get me scheduled for a separate call tomorrow but I have a feeling they will. They are such a great company!!😊😊

Alex performed the winter service on my unit. This business along with Alex, are very professional and upfront about everything. To be transparent, this is the maintenance included with the purchase of a unit from them. I was informed about everything to include pictures as proof. I was told that my unit is 100% and very clean and again pictures to prove it. I was reccomended this business by a friend and glad he did. The initial purchase experience was also amazing. I had contacted 5 other businesses to get quotes about a new unit as my upstairs unit failed. 2 were outrageous quotes and I am technically still waiting on the other 3. On every instance of getting a quote, I waited about 1 week. Luckily my house has two units but still, un acceptable especially during the summer. I guess they all had so much business they did not care for mine. When I called this business not only did they come out the same day, I had the new unit installed with in 48 hrs. Oh and let's not forget the quote they gave me was the lowest of all. I can say enough good things about this business. Keep up the great work.

San Antonio Heat Pump Questions

Will a heat pump keep my San Antonio house warm during a hard freeze?

Yes, with a caveat. As the outdoor temperature drops into the 20s, a standard heat pump extracts less heat from the outside air and calls on its electric auxiliary strips to make up the difference. If those strips are sized correctly, wired correctly and working, the house stays warm; it just costs more to run for those few days. During February 2021 the homes that struggled were usually ones where the strips had failed silently, the thermostat was not staging them in, or the outdoor unit had a pre-existing fault. That is why we test auxiliary heat at every fall tune-up. Newer cold-climate heat pumps hold capacity to lower temperatures than older models, and a dual-fuel setup with a gas furnace as backup removes the concern entirely.

Is “emergency heat” the same as “aux heat” on my thermostat?

Not quite. Auxiliary heat is automatic: the thermostat turns on the electric strips alongside the heat pump when the heat pump alone cannot keep up, then turns them off again. Emergency heat is a manual setting that shuts the outdoor unit off completely and runs the strips by themselves. Use emergency heat only when the outdoor unit has failed or is iced solid and you are waiting for a repair; it will keep the house warm but at a much higher cost. If you find the emergency heat setting was left on from last winter, that explains a high bill. If the aux indicator is on during mild weather when you have not touched anything, the heat pump has a problem and it is worth a call.

My Cibolo house is all-electric. Is a heat pump my only option for heating?

Without a gas line, your practical choices are a heat pump or an electric furnace, which is just a blower with heat strips. Of the two, the heat pump is far cheaper to run for most of a San Antonio winter, because it moves heat rather than generating it. An electric furnace uses the strips for every minute of heating, which is what a heat pump does only during a freeze. If your current system is an electric furnace paired with a straight air conditioner, replacing the pair with a heat pump at the next changeout is usually the right move. We will price it against a like-for-like replacement so you can see the difference in writing, and financing through Service Finance Company is available, subject to credit approval.

How long does a heat pump last in this climate?

Less time than the same unit would last somewhere it only ran half the year, because a heat pump here works the long cooling season and then keeps working through winter. Maintenance is what stretches that life: a clean outdoor coil, a correct refrigerant charge, working defrost and strips, and a drain that does not back up. Two tune-ups a year, one before summer and one before winter, is the schedule we recommend, and it is what Care Club provides for $9.99 a month. When a heat pump does reach the end, the signs are the same as for any air conditioner: rising bills, repeated repairs and a compressor that struggles to start on a hot afternoon.
