The Migration
In 1950, the Sunbelt region (Florida, Texas, Arizona, Southern California, Georgia and New Mexico) started to experience tremendous growth due to the air conditioner. From 1950 to the year 2000, Texas experienced a 170% population increase, the largest for all of the states in the Sunbelt region. After World War II, many people looked to the northeast to settle down and find work. This made the job market extremely dense and left many unemployed. Luckily, the air conditioner arrived shortly after and allowed people to spread into the south to seek economic glory.
New Business
Before the air conditioner, many businesses that existed in the south would close their doors for the summer because it was simply too hot. The inefficiency of employees due to heat made it hard for businesses in the south to compete with their northern counterparts. This left the American economy unbalanced and searching for a solution. Fortunately, the air conditioner was that solution, and it helped move over 100 million people into the Sunbelt region to find work. This provided diversification to a growing economy and allowed it to blossom.
