Call professional first, then try to find source of the leak
A customer called because she noticed there was a leak in her ceiling, but she wasn’t sure where it was coming from. No matter the source, though, she did the right thing by calling in a professional. A ceiling leak can present a very obvious problem – if the water puts too much pressure on it, it can collapse. That could result in injury and/or extensive damage to your home.
Once you’ve called in a professional, it may be helpful to try and detect the source of the leak. There are a few things you can do to try and narrow down possible causes and locations:
- How’s the weather outside? This matters because if the leak only occurs during bad weather, it probably means the leak starts somewhere on the roof. If it leaks consistently – bad weather or not – then the leak is more than likely coming from a plumbing supply line.
- Does the water look fresh or dirty? Clean water indicates it could be coming from a leaking plumbing line or fixture. If the water is dirty or stains the ceiling, it might be a leak in the roof.
- Is it wet between roof joists? In order to determine this, you’ll have to go up to the attic. If there is a plumbing line near the leak, check the line for leaks or moisture.
- Are there any spots where light shines through? While in the attic, look up. If there is light shining through, you’ll have to plug the holes to prevent water from getting in.
- How is the roof holding up? Inspect the roof’s interior; check valley flashing, gaskets around plumbing vents, flashing around chimneys, and dormer vents; Look for shingles that need repair; Check all areas of the roof where two different materials meet (between siding, shingles, or flashing).
- Do you gutters or downspouts have clogs?
