Radiant Helping Hands Winner: The Settlement Home for Children

We at Radiant Plumbing & Air Conditioning are happy to announce the first recipient of our monthly Radiant Helping Hands Charity outreach program!

The local Austin Non-Profit that we have chosen is The Settlement Home for Children.  The $1000 donation will be used to help with their yearly garage sale, which is the main source of revenue for the organization.  They have been doing good in our community for 97 years! We stand behind this amazing group and hope that you can stop by the Palmer Events Center on Friday Nov. 1st through Sunday Nov. 3rd to help support their cause and find some unique and amazing treasures at their Annual Garage Sale. Not only do procedes go to help The Settlement Home themselves, but they use the amazing community support to help spread the love to more than 50 area non-profits! This is why they were very deserving to be the group that helps us kick off our giving program.

The Settlement Home for Children has been a part of Austin for almost 100 years.  A group of women started The Settlement Home in 1916 as a day nursery for impoverished working families.  Soon after, it was turning into a residential facility for children.  The Settlement Home now has several programs: a Residential Treatment Center, Group Home Program, Transitional Living Program and Foster and Adoption Program.  The children who live here have been removed from their home due to abuse or neglect.  The Home provides a place for children to live, therapy, schooling at our on campus charter school, medical care and activities.

The mission of The Settlement Home for Children is to promote healing and growth in children, young adults and families by providing a continuum of care, support and resources.

The Settlement Home receives some funding from the state, but there is still a significant gap left.  To raise money, The Settlement Home holds its Annual Charity Garage Sale.  This famous Garage Sale attracts more than 25,000 shoppers.  Held at Palmer Events Center, the Garage Sale features unique items and bargain priced merchandise in 21 well organized departments.  One hundred percent of the proceeds go to The Settlement Home for Children.

The Annual Garage Sale provides an opportunity for The Settlement Home for Children to not only help the children we serve, but also the Central Texas non-profit community. Through our Giving for Living program on Sunday, The Settlement Home provides vouchers to more than 50 Central Texas non-profits. These non-profits distribute the $25 vouchers to their clients who are in need of essential items, such as clothing, baby clothes and toys, kitchen items and more. The clients use these vouchers to pay for items at the Garage Sale.  In 2012, we extended our reach by also adopting Lanier High School as part of our Giving for Living program. We provided each Lanier High School student with a shopping certificate to spend on Sunday at the Garage Sale.  We plan to continue expanding the reach of this program to help more people in the Austin area.

The Annual Settlement Home for Children Charity Garage Sale is almost here.  The event’s Preview Party night is Wednesday, October 30.  General sale days are Friday, November 1 through Sunday, November 3.  The sale is held at Palmer Events Center, located at 900 Barton Springs Road.  More information is available at www.settlementhome.org
