What is the Average Lifespan of a Residential Boiler?
Over the course of some of our service calls this winter, we’ve noticed something: some homeowners are still using boilers that are well past their expiration dates! We’ve performed maintenance on boilers that are 20, 30, and even 40 years old! It’s great to make the most out of a hardworking appliance, but there’s a point where not getting boiler replacement can be unwise…and even dangerous!
The average life expectancy of a boiler is about 10 to 15 years. That’s with regular maintenance and other safety precautions taken. Most boiler manufacturers expect you to replace your boiler after that time, so warranties are generally between 6 and 10 years. Why is it so critical to replace a boiler before it gets too old?
Three Reasons for Boiler Replacement
- Efficiency– Over time, boilers (like all home appliances) tend to lose their efficiency. As heating efficiency decreases, not only does your house feel colder — you might also start to notice your monthly bills going up, since your furnace is working harder than ever to reach the thermostat pre-set.
- Safety– In order to produce heat, boilers burn fuel. Combustion creates byproduct gasses like carbon monoxide that can be serious health risks in large quantities. Older boilers tend to be a major CO risk. CO levels become dangerous at approximately 70-100 ppm.
- Risk of Failure– Technology for boilers is constantly increasing, and the standard for energy efficiency keeps rising. That means if your boiler fails or springs a leak, it may be difficult to get a direct replacement. Replacing your boiler in a timely fashion helps ensure you don’t have to worry about sudden heating failures and be forced into a major upgrade!
