My son is a proud member of Boy Scouts, Troop 52. I think it is pretty cool that they have a Plumbing Merit Badge. I looked at the requirements, and they were very involved. Any boy that recieves this badge will have to demonstrats some skill, and knowledge with plumbing.
The plumbing industry is really lacking in young people learning our trade. In a few years there will be a severe shortage of plumbers. In Texas alone, the average age of plumbers is 51! That will either drive quality down (handyman), or make prices higher (supply and demand).
Plumbing rocks! Young people who don't have a vision for a career that can be achieved through college should consider plumbing. It is challenging, and there are so many aspects of the business that you can almost always find an area that suits your personality. The best part is here, we get paid to learn. In 4 years you are a Journeyman, making better than 20.00 per hour, and were paid the whole time to get there.
